Three additions from Mexico City

Aeromexico plans to start daily flights from Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport to three US destinations in January 2027, according to The Points Guy. Service to John Wayne Airport in Orange County is scheduled to begin on January 11, followed by Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on January 14 and Portland International Airport on January 21.

The Points Guy reports that Aeromexico intends to use 166-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on all three routes. Cirium schedule data cited by the publisher showed no other airlines flying nonstop between Mexico City and any of the three US airports. The flights remain planned services rather than operating routes.

The expansion comes amid concern reported by The Points Guy that US authorities could lower Mexico’s aviation safety rating to Category 2 as soon as February 2027. Such a change would prevent Mexican airlines from adding US flights, although existing schedules could continue. The rating concerns national aviation oversight rather than the safety of an individual carrier.

Quintana Roo seeks a broader visitor mix

The Mexico City additions do not reflect conditions across every Mexican destination. Travel Daily News reports that Quintana Roo tourism officials have identified weaker US flight frequencies while seeking more visitors from Canada, Europe and other international markets.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced a 20% increase in tourism-promotion funding covering the state’s 12 destinations. Authorities also confirmed plans for a direct Milan–Cozumel flight scheduled to begin on December 24, 2026. The measures were presented at the Cancún Travel Mart, held from October 21 to 23, 2026.

The regional figures are uneven. Travel Daily News cites reporting based on Grupo Mundo Maya data that international commercial operations at Tulum International Airport fell by more than 87% between January and September 2026. That measure concerns airport operations and does not represent an equivalent decline in visitor arrivals across Quintana Roo.
