Five killed in Cape Flats shooting as police offer R100,000 reward
Gunmen open fire at home
Five people were killed and three wounded when unidentified gunmen entered a home on Blode Street at about 20:00 on Saturday and fired multiple shots, according to information from the South African Police Service reported by SABC News. Police said the victims had been drinking at the residence when the attack occurred.
Four men and a woman, aged between 21 and 33, died at the scene. A man and two women were taken to a medical facility for treatment. Police are investigating five counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Manhunt and reward
Anti-Gang Unit detectives have begun a manhunt, and no arrests had been reported. Police said preliminary information indicated that the shooting could be connected to gang violence, but that assessment has not been established as fact. Officers remained on high alert in the area.
News24 reported that police were offering a reward of 100,000 rand following the shooting. Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais condemned the killings and called for intensified intelligence-led operations targeting gang leaders and networks supplying illegal firearms and ammunition.
Locality described differently
The location was identified differently in the reports. The police information carried by SABC News described the incident as occurring in Steenberg on the Cape Flats, while News24 described it as a Lavender Hill shooting. Both accounts reported the same toll of five dead and three wounded; the available information does not clarify the differing locality labels.
