Fight followed by shooting

Hartford police said officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert shortly before 2 a.m. Monday near Arch Street and City Hall. WTNH reported that the shooting occurred outside 81 Arch Street, where police said a dispute or fight preceded the gunfire.

Police identified the victim as David Mendoza-Fernandez, a 40-year-old Hartford resident. He was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries, according to WFSB’s account of the police statement. Investigators said multiple witnesses saw the shooting.

Vehicle located and suspect detained

As officers worked at the shooting scene, other officers spoke with witnesses who provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle, police said. WFSB reported that officers found the vehicle about a quarter-mile away near Charter Oak and Main streets and took a suspect into custody.

Police had not identified the person in custody. Lt. Aaron Boisvert said investigators believed they had detained the person responsible for the shooting, but still needed to interview the suspect and determine the motive. The investigation also led authorities to close part of Arch Street near several businesses and the Connecticut Convention Center.
