Antonoff enters the dispute

Jack Antonoff has publicly condemned Ed Sheeran’s decision to continue the Loop Tour without Macklemore. Billboard reported that Antonoff, speaking in an interview with The Guardian published October 25, argued that Sheeran should have cancelled the tour and performed free shows outside the venues to raise money instead.

According to Billboard, US promoter Messina Touring Group announced in mid-September that Macklemore had been removed from the supporting lineup following objections to his onstage pro-Palestinian demonstrations at two New Jersey concerts. Billboard said Robert Kraft had urged stadium owners to bar Sheeran from their venues unless Macklemore left the bill. Billboard reported that Sheeran had discussed alternatives with Kraft and other venue owners before deciding to proceed without the rapper.

Explaining his position at the time, Sheeran said he wanted to remain outside politics and use his platform as a place of safety, diplomacy and open conversation. Billboard said it had contacted his representative for comment on Antonoff’s latest criticism.

Benefit concerts follow earlier tour announcement

The latest concerts are distinct from Macklemore’s earlier announcement of plans for a “Free Palestine” benefit tour. France24 now reports that he is holding charity stadium shows to raise funds for Palestine, although its report does not specify venues, dates or fundraising totals.

Billboard also reported that Macklemore said he donated the $1 million earned from his brief run on the Loop Tour to Palestinian aid. The outlet said Sheeran and Kraft subsequently pledged money to unspecified humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
