Ammonia confirmed in smoke from Newport plant fire
Hazardous-materials team sent to fire
Newport fire chief Rob Murphy confirmed ammonia was present in smoke from the Pacific Seafood plant fire, although the concentration remained unclear, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported. A partial roof collapse occurred inside the facility, and the Oregon State Fire Marshal was sending a regional hazardous-materials team and coordinator. No injuries had been reported.
The city’s evacuation order covers a one-mile radius around the plant. An evacuation site has been established at Sam Case Elementary School, while residents have been advised to remain indoors or wear a mask outside.
Level 3 evacuations ordered around Newport seafood facility fire
Evacuation radius remains unclear
Authorities ordered evacuations around the Pacific Seafood facility near Newport’s Historic Bayfront following reports of a large industrial fire. The Oregonian said officials announced the fire at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday and asked people to leave because of potential chemical hazards.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office issued a Level 3 “Go Now” alert shortly after 10 a.m., according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. The evacuation boundary was unclear: an Everbridge alert described a half-mile radius around the facility, while a Sheriff’s Office news release and KOIN 6 reported a one-mile radius.
Part of Highway 20 closed
KOIN 6 reported that Highway 20 was closed from Harney Street west to Highway 101. Oregon Public Broadcasting said videos posted on social media showed smoke rising from the seafood-processing facility and moving inland toward residential neighborhoods.
