Thousands rally across France against racism after deadly shooting

Crowds gather in French cities

Thousands of people joined anti-racism demonstrations across France, with gatherings reported in Paris, Marseille, Amiens, Avignon, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Lyon, Metz, Montpellier, Perpignan, Strasbourg and Toulouse. ABC Color, citing EFE, said several hundred people assembled at Place de Stalingrad in Paris.

At Marseille’s Old Port, hundreds gathered on Monday evening. Police estimated attendance at 800, while organisers said the crowd exceeded 1,000, according to Euronews.

Paris gathering denounces racist hatred

The Paris gathering was called by dozens of organisations, including the Human Rights League, SOS Racisme, Amnesty International, MRAP and several trade unions and student groups. Organisers said the event expressed support for the victims and opposed what they described as the normalisation of racist hatred.

Another tribute was held in Aubervilliers on Sunday, while gatherings were also reported as planned in Dijon, Nice and Arles.

Shooting left one dead and five wounded

The demonstrations followed a shooting near Paris in which 26-year-old mixed martial arts fighter Pengo Bossio Wangi was killed and five other people were wounded. The injured included an 11-year-old girl who was recovering in hospital, ABC Color reported.

ABC Color said the alleged gunman fired from a vehicle at people perceived as racialised or Muslim. President Emmanuel Macron characterised the shooting as a racist terrorist attack, and France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor was investigating. A 39-year-old suspect was detained and underwent a hospital assessment before questioning continued, the report said.
