Suspect arrested in deadly shooting near Paris

One killed and five wounded

A suspect is in police custody over a series of shootings in the Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verrière, according to police cited by 1News NZ. One person was killed and five others were wounded, a toll also reported by the BBC and Channel NewsAsia.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said shots were fired at three sites in a period of less than 15 minutes. He said three injured people were in life-threatening condition. Aurore Bergé, the minister responsible for gender equality and combating discrimination, said a wounded 12-year-old girl was among those seriously hurt.

Motive remains under investigation

France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s office is leading the investigation. It is examining suspected murder linked to terrorism and whether victims were selected on the basis of perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion.

Nuñez said prosecutors viewed the case as potentially involving terrorism and racism. President Emmanuel Macron characterized the violence as a racist terrorist attack, according to the BBC and Channel NewsAsia. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the person killed was of African origin and one of the critically injured victims was of North African origin. Investigators have not yet established the motive.
