Power failure prompts Lexington evacuation
More than 100 residents were evacuated from the CareOne nursing and rehabilitation facility at 178 Lowell Street in Lexington on Saturday night following what fire officials described as a major power failure, Boston 25 News reported.
Lexington Fire Chief Derek Sencabaugh said the building had experienced intermittent problems over several days. Its electricity was connected to almost all building functions, including the sewage system, and officials ordered the property to be de-energized.
Crews from other fire departments helped move residents through a mutual-aid programme for nursing facilities. Sencabaugh said residents were primarily being transferred to other nursing centres in Lexington and to CareOne locations elsewhere in Massachusetts, rather than to hospitals.
A maintenance worker was injured during the operation but was expected to recover, according to the chief. No reopening time had been announced.
Dozens displaced in Boston apartment fire
A separate fire at a Boston apartment building displaced dozens of people, MassLive reported. Six people were rescued from the property, including a four-year-old child who was taken to hospital.
