Campaign-finance allegations
Ecuadorian police arrested González early Thursday in a rural area of Manabí, about 300 kilometres from Quito, G1 reported. She is accused of money laundering involving financing for her unsuccessful 2023 presidential campaign against President Daniel Noboa. Police are investigating whether the money may have come from Venezuela, according to G1.
González denied the allegations, while her Citizens’ Revolution party said it had already submitted all campaign accounts. She is an ally of former president Rafael Correa and has been travelling around Ecuador to organise opposition to Noboa, G1 reported.
Noboa alleged that former Colombian president Gustavo Petro was involved in the purported scheme and said he was dismantling a major drug-trafficking and money-laundering structure. Petro responded on social media by accusing Ecuador of developing a dictatorship.
