New York tunes in: repairs, close listening and a late Halloween week
Consequential housing work in East Brooklyn sets this week’s grounded opening note. From there, the city’s plans shift between basketball, stage illusion and Halloween performances that use sound, film and unusually late hours in very different ways.
A major repair milestone in East Brooklyn
The week begins with consequential news about the city’s housing. Gothamist reported on Monday, October 26, that NYCHA recently completed $636 million in upgrades and renovations at the Reid and Park Rock developments in East Brooklyn. The investment addresses aging public housing while the agency continues to face a multibillion-dollar backlog of needed repairs. For residents of these developments, the completed work is substantial; across the wider system, the scale of the backlog remains an important limitation. It is a reminder that some of New York’s most meaningful changes happen at home rather than under marquee lights.
Weekend pick: a ghost story built for headphones
For Friday, October 30, the week’s most intriguing contrast between storytelling and technology is A Ghost in Your Ear, scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre. The premise places an actor in a sound studio for a last-minute audiobook recording, where the horrors in a ghost-story script begin escaping the page. Created by Jamie Armitage with Ben and Max Ringham, the production uses binaural sound and headphones to place its effects around each audience member. That listening-centered approach distinguishes it from the week’s arena game, conventional stage performance and film event without requiring a grander scale.
Midweek, two very different stages
The New York Knicks are scheduled to play the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. EDT. It is the straightforward sports choice among this week’s selected plans, and an emphatic change of scale from Friday’s headphone-based theatre. The listing notes a four-ticket customer limit for the relevant offer and directs questions about accessible and companion seating to the Disabled Services Department.
On Wednesday, October 28, Jamie Allan’s Amaze is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT at New World Stages, Stage 5, with Harry De Cruz named as the performer. Children under 4 will not be admitted, while the production notices specify bright and flashing lights, theatrical haze and smoke. Latecomers will be seated at management’s discretion. The earlier start makes this a different proposition from the adult late-night events later in the week, though families should weigh the stated effects and age restriction.
A Halloween discovery at Berlin
The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Live with the New York Cast is scheduled at Berlin on Thursday, October 29, at 10 p.m. EDT. The event pairs the film with a live New York cast and is strictly 21 and over; valid identification showing the holder is at least 21 is required. Its combination of screen and live performance offers a different route into Halloween weekend from Friday’s headphone-based ghost story, while its later hour and firm age boundary place it squarely in the adult-evening column.
Look ahead: Sunday ends at the last possible moment
The week’s final selected plan begins almost at the edge of the calendar. The Midnight Special is scheduled for 11:55 p.m. EST on Sunday, November 1, at Wild Horses. Categorized as music, it is also strictly 21 and over, with valid identification required. The start comes after New York’s return to standard time that morning and just five minutes before Monday, turning a Sunday-night outing into a bridge to the next week rather than a conventional weekend closer. Confirm the 11:55 p.m. start with the organizer before setting out.
