New York this week: a museum opening and an autumn weekend outdoors
The Morgan adds a new perspective on Rembrandt, while Governors Island and Staten Island offer different ways to spend an October day. Keep the weekend local, or choose one longer outing, with neighbourhood celebrations continuing into next week.
A fresh reason to visit the Morgan
The Morgan’s new exhibition calendar gives this week a thoughtful starting point. Rembrandt’s Lions: Art and Exile in the Dutch Republic is dated 23 October to 31 January, bringing drawings, etchings and paintings into a discussion of migration and belonging in the artist’s world. The museum describes a combination of its own holdings and selected loans. This is a new exhibition to consider, not a review based on a visit. Its long run also gives you flexibility: if the weekend belongs to outdoor plans, the Morgan need not be squeezed into the same day.
Make one island your main outing
Pumpkin Point returns to Nolan Park on Governors Island on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, from 10:00 to 17:00. The Trust’s programme includes the pumpkin patch, crafts, a reading nook, music and nature activities, making this a family outing with several possible stops rather than a single performance to catch. The festival is free; plan the ferry separately and check the current sailing information before leaving. We would give this its own stretch of the day instead of trying to combine it with every neighbourhood celebration on the calendar.
A Staten Island option with a rain plan
Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex has its Fall Festival on Saturday 24 October, 10:00–15:00. The city lists free entry with no registration, plus a pumpkin patch, music, crafts, inflatables and games. It also specifies that the festival moves indoors if it rains, a useful detail when choosing an outing ahead of time. A youth cross-country event is part of the wider programme, but its age range is separate from the family festival. Follow the organiser’s information if you are planning to take part in that competition.
Or stay closer to the neighbourhood
The transport department’s Trick-or-Streets calendar provides a smaller-scale alternative. On Sunday 25 October it lists the Chelsea Green Park Halloween Celebration on West 20th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, with a 10:00–14:30 window. These published windows describe the street event, so check the local organiser for the timing of any particular activity. Looking ahead, the same calendar lists a Flatiron Plaza event on Wednesday 28 October, 15:00–19:00, along Broadway between 21st and 29th streets. That is another date to save if the weekend is already spoken for.
Put next Friday in the diary
The city’s recreation-centre programme continues on Friday 30 October. Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center lists its Haunted House and Hallow Gala from 15:00 to 19:00, while Bowne Park Field House lists Mad Monster Lab and a fall festival from 16:00 to 20:00. Both are advertised as free without registration. Their rain arrangements differ: the Brooklyn gala moves indoors; at Bowne Park the haunted house continues while the outdoor festival moves to 1 November. Choose the outing that works for your household, and keep those practical distinctions with the date.
