Egypt’s request and fighting near Taiz
Egyptian President Sisi has asked parliament to authorize support for Saudi Arabia in its conflict with Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels if Riyadh requests assistance, Africanews reported. The proposed role is intended to protect Saudi territory, according to the report.
Sisi said on Wednesday that Egyptian forces would not attack Yemen. His statement framed the potential deployment as defensive support for the Gulf kingdom rather than an offensive operation inside Yemen.
Separately, renewed fighting has been reported on the outskirts of the Yemeni city of Taiz. Euronews reported tank fire and gunfire during the clashes. Within the city, accumulating rubbish and obstructed roads are also raising public-health concerns.
