Tibet earthquake reports give injury tolls of 46 to 76

Injury figures differ as rescue work continues

A later report from Thanh Nien, citing Xinhua, said 76 people were injured in the earthquake. Earlier accounts carried lower figures: The Guardian reported 54 injuries, while Hong Kong Free Press said CCTV had put the number at 46, including 11 people described as seriously injured. All three reports said at least 16 people had been killed.

The reports do not explain the discrepancies among the injury totals or establish a single confirmed progression. Hong Kong Free Press, citing Xinhua, said officials were still evaluating the damage and relief work was continuing. The Guardian also reported that search and rescue operations remained under way.

Homes damaged and communications disrupted

Hong Kong Free Press reported that the epicentre was in Maru township in Baqen County. Separately, it cited the US Geological Survey as placing the epicentre in mountainous terrain about 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and about 390 kilometres northeast of Lhasa. Reports said at least 339 homes had collapsed or been damaged. The Guardian also reported that 20 livestock sheds collapsed and at least seven aftershocks were recorded.

Power and telecommunications services were disrupted in the Baqen County seat, according to Xinhua reporting carried by Hong Kong Free Press. More than 300 police officers were dispatched for relief work, while the regional fire and rescue corps mobilised 347 personnel. CCTV footage described by Hong Kong Free Press showed rescuers moving through damaged buildings and soldiers preparing for deployment.
