Aberdeen–Seyðisfjörður route remains conceptual

Officials from the Port of Aberdeen and the municipality of Múlaþing have held early discussions about a passenger-and-freight ferry connecting Scotland with Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland, according to Iceland Review. An unnamed operator has expressed interest, but there is no formal agreement, route plan or launch timetable.

Port chief executive Bob Sanguinetti said Aberdeen would be interested in a regular Iceland service. Múlaþing mayor Dagmar Ýr Stefánsdóttir said freight demand would be essential to viability and that establishing a route could take several years. The municipality has asked the Icelandic Tourist Board to examine import and export flows, while the interested party would need to consult major East Iceland exporters.

The prospective service would also have to address the United Kingdom’s position outside the Schengen Area. Seyðisfjörður already has an international vehicle-ferry connection through the Norröna service to the Faroe Islands and Denmark.

Truck blockades disrupt southern Italy

Truck blockades continued in parts of southern Italy, although action had been suspended in Calabria and Sicily, ANSA reported. The outlet said trucks were receiving escorts, some markets were empty, businesses were preparing to halt operations and a motorway junction had closed.

The mayors of Naples and Bari warned that their cities faced a risk of paralysis, according to ANSA. The Italian government was also preparing an aid decree as authorities pursued a tougher response to the disruption.
