Death toll revised
Different casualty figures have been reported from the attack on mourners at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Hmoud, in Jordan’s southern Karak province. CNN said at least eight people were killed and 40 injured, while Daily Sabah also reported eight deaths and about 40 wounded.
Jordan News cited Health Minister Ibrahim Al-Badour as saying Friday evening that seven people had died and 40 had sought treatment at government and military hospitals. CNN reported that the toll was revised several times as information emerged. It also cited Al-Badour as saying two wounded people were in critical condition.
Search for attackers continues
Gunmen opened fire as people attended a funeral at the church. Jordan’s public security agency said Friday afternoon that the unidentified attackers had not been captured and described the shooting as a terrorist attack targeting Christians at the funeral.
Prime Minister Jafar Hassan said state agencies were working to bring those responsible to justice, according to comments carried by Petra and reported by CNN. King Abdullah pledged a forceful response against the perpetrators.
