Waitākere intensive care unit remains idle

A fully equipped six-bed intensive care unit at Waitākere Hospital in Auckland has no scheduled opening date, operating budget or staff, according to reporting by RNZ published by 1News. The unit was announced in 2021 as West Auckland’s first ICU and formed part of a $96 million urgent-care ward development.

Waitākere Hospital operations director Brad Healey said recruitment would proceed once the model of care had been confirmed, citing the specialist workforce and clinical planning required before intensive care services could begin safely. Health NZ said critical-care services would be introduced in phases. West Auckland patients requiring intensive care are normally transferred to North Shore or Auckland City hospitals.
