Paris this week: smaller doors into a changing art weekend
Art Basel’s early closure changes the weekend, but there are other places to look: image-making at OFFSCREEN, a renewed sculpture collection and a photography retrospective in the Marais. Keep the plan flexible and check each venue before travelling.
The change to make first
If your weekend plan still begins at Art Basel, change it before you travel. The fair’s official visitor notice says it will not open on Saturday 24 or Sunday 25 October. Friday’s public session was scheduled to finish at 19:00, and the organiser says weekend ticket holders will be contacted directly. Older event calendars still carry the original three-day dates, which makes the current notice the useful one. The alternatives below have their own programmes; none should be treated as an extension of your Art Basel ticket.
Spend time with moving images
OFFSCREEN lists its fifth edition at the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière through Sunday 25 October. Its focus is installations, still images and moving images, with Ana Mendieta named guest of honour. That gives you a specific reason to choose it: a chance to spend time with image-based work in a different setting, rather than trying to reproduce the scale of the Grand Palais visit. Consult the fair’s own booking and visitor information for the day you choose, especially while other parts of the city’s art programme are changing.
A collection to rediscover
There is a quieter piece of museum news on rue d’Assas. Musée Zadkine announced a new route through its collections from Tuesday 20 October, following its temporary closure, with previously unseen works and new acquisitions. Entry to that display is free. The appeal is straightforward: you can make a modest museum visit the centre of an afternoon, without needing a major fair to justify the outing. We have not visited the new installation, so this is an invitation to explore it rather than a review.
For planning, the published visitor information gives 100 bis rue d’Assas, Tuesday to Sunday opening from 10:00 to 18:00 and last entry at 17:30. Monday is the closed day. Check the museum’s latest notice before heading over; the normal timetable is useful background, not a guarantee against a last-minute change.
A Saturday opening with time to return
Galerie Jean-François Cazeau has announced its Pierre Jahan retrospective for 24 October to 23 December at 8 rue Sainte-Anastase in the Marais. The gallery describes a selection of around sixty works intended to show the breadth of his practice. Arts in the City lists the exhibition as free. It is a useful counterpoint to a fair weekend: photography with a much longer viewing window, so there is no need to force it into Saturday if your plans change. Confirm the gallery’s opening hours directly.
That leaves a manageable choice for the week ahead: the time-limited OFFSCREEN programme this weekend, or the longer-running Jahan exhibition when you have more room in the diary. Give one stop enough time instead of chasing every opening. In a weekend of revised schedules, knowing which exhibition can wait is as helpful as knowing which one ends on Sunday.
