The week at a glance
Sri Lanka chased England’s 429-4 with one ball remaining in Rawalpindi, overcoming an innings in which Harry Brook recorded the fastest double-century in ODI history. Elsewhere, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the New Orleans Saints in France’s first regular-season NFL game.
Como defeated Manchester United 4-1 in the Champions League, extending United’s winless run to seven matches in all competitions. In the NBA, Luka Dončić scored 52 points for the Los Angeles Lakers, while Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams was taken from the court on a stretcher following a left leg injury. African football brought a CAF Champions League group-stage place for Simba and Senegal’s elimination from Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualification by Guinea.
Brook’s record gives way to Sri Lanka’s chase
Brook made 202 from 116 deliveries against Sri Lanka on October 22, reaching his double-century from 114 balls to surpass the previous ODI record of 117 deliveries set by India’s Shubman Gill. The England captain became the first English player to score an ODI double-century and passed Ben Stokes’s national record of 182. Joe Root contributed 69 as England reached 429-4.
Sri Lanka responded with the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history and won by two wickets. Pavan Rathnayake scored 130 from 106 balls, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka each finished three runs short of a century. Sri Lanka needed six from the final two deliveries when Janith Liyanage hit Josh Tongue over long-off to complete the chase.
The defeat left England at the bottom of the tri-series standings following losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Brook said England needed to win their next two matches to reach the final in Lahore. In Formula One, ANTARA reported that Antonelli produced a dominant performance to win the United States Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen completing the podium.
Before the race, 1News reported that the 20-year-old Italian remained within reach of becoming Formula One’s youngest world champion. Its pre-race calculations said Antonelli could secure the title with a victory only if Mercedes teammate George Russell finished ninth or lower and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton placed fifth or lower. The supplied race report did not state the resulting championship positions.
Real Madrid take El Clásico; United lose again
Real Madrid won the season’s first El Clásico 2-1 at Camp Nou, recording only their second victory in eight matches against Barcelona. Kylian Mbappé scored both Madrid goals, either side of an equaliser from Raphinha. Jude Bellingham’s backheel helped create the winning move before substitute Eduardo Camavinga supplied Mbappé. The result left José Mourinho’s side three points behind Barcelona.
Mourinho praised his team’s organisation, concentration and willingness to play out from defence under pressure. The Cyprus Mail reported that Real captain Fede Valverde again started at right-back, while goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made two important interventions in the absence of Thibaut Courtois.
Manchester United’s winless sequence reached seven matches in all competitions with a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como on Wednesday night. Nico Paz scored twice for the Italian club. United manager Michael Carrick called the result unacceptable but said he had not given thought to his own position.
Paris hosts NFL first as Dončić reaches 52
The Stade de France near Paris hosted France’s first regular-season NFL game on Sunday. Pittsburgh defeated New Orleans 16-10, with Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing a touchdown pass that moved him alone into third place on the NFL’s career touchdown-pass list. France24 reported a festive atmosphere inside the stadium, including a halftime rap performance.
Dončić recorded the NBA season’s first 50-point game, scoring 52 and making eight three-pointers as the Lakers defeated the Utah Jazz 132-123. He added 10 assists and seven rebounds. Los Angeles recovered from an 18-point second-quarter deficit, and Dončić completed a 14-5 run with consecutive three-pointers that put the Lakers ahead 127-121 with 1:42 remaining.
Earlier in the week, Dončić scored 28 points in three quarters as the Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors 127-105. His half-court basket at the halftime buzzer followed an extended exchange with Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who received a technical foul during the game and criticised Dončić afterward.
Oklahoma City’s 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers was overshadowed by Williams’s injury during the closing stages of the fourth quarter. Annahar reported that Williams injured his left ankle while attempting a dunk, received treatment on the court and was carried away on a stretcher. The Thunder had not announced an official diagnosis at the time of the report, leaving the injury’s precise nature and severity uncertain.
Simba advance; Senegal eliminated by Guinea
Simba reached the CAF Champions League group stage by beating Equatorial Guinea’s FC 15 de Agosto de Akonibe 3-0 in Dar es Salaam, completing a 9-1 aggregate victory. Ancient Oura opened the scoring in the 56th minute, followed by goals from Elie Mpanzu and Keletso Makgalwa. Daily News reported that Simba became the third Tanzanian team to reach an African inter-club group stage this season, joining Young Africans and Azam FC.
At youth international level, Guinea defeated Senegal 3-2 in the WAFU-A Under-20 tournament semi-final. Moussa Gueye scored Senegal’s two goals, but the result eliminated the Senegalese side and meant it would not participate in the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
