National average remains above $4
The US national average gasoline price has remained above $4 a gallon since the end of July, AL.com reported. GasBuddy considers it unlikely that the average will fall below that threshold before the midterm election.
A separate report carried by WTVF NewsChannel 5 said 2026 had already surpassed the Biden-era record for the number of days when gasoline averaged at least $4 nationally.
Presidential averages compared
The average gasoline price during President Donald Trump’s second term has now exceeded the average during Joe Biden’s presidency, according to a CNN analysis of AAA data cited by WTVF NewsChannel 5. That comparison covers averages across the two presidential periods and is separate from the current national price.
Gasoline reached a national record of $5.02 a gallon in June 2022 during Biden’s presidency, the report said. Trump’s first-term average was $2.47 a gallon, while the national price fell to $1.77 in April 2020.
Trump promised gasoline below $2 a gallon during his 2024 campaign. White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told CNN that the administration was releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, temporarily waiving the Jones Act and allowing red-dyed diesel to be used on highways as part of its efforts to lower pump prices.
