Local milestone amid continuing outbreak

Healthcare workers celebrated as the last patient left an Ebola treatment centre in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to footage reported by Al Jazeera. The discharge marks a milestone for that centre but does not indicate that the wider outbreak has ended.

ABC Pacific reported that the outbreak had exceeded 10,000 cases. Health officials described it as the world’s second-largest Ebola outbreak and the fastest-growing in the DRC’s history.

The health response has also faced violence. Sky News reported that officials said a nurse working on the Ebola response was killed by a group of young people armed with machetes. ABC Pacific also reported that another nurse was injured.
