Further strengthening was projected but had not yet occurred in the cited updates. The National Hurricane Center said Vance could attain major Category 3 status before Friday ended.
The center measured the hurricane’s northwestward speed at about 8 kph and expected it to maintain that direction over the weekend. Its forecast brought Vance nearer to the Puerto Vallarta area by Monday.
Conagua forecast heavy rain for Michoacán and Guerrero, showers in Oaxaca, and waves of two to three meters on the Guerrero coast. Separately, the National Hurricane Center reported that Vance’s outer bands were already channeling winds and rough seas toward the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
