Senior dies following off-campus shooting

Norfolk police said their initial findings indicated that Coleman was shot accidentally off campus. WAVY, citing court documents, reported that the shooting occurred in a Waffle House parking lot in the 5700 block of East Virginia Beach Boulevard.

Officers responded to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital at about 11:45 p.m. after Coleman was brought there with a critical gunshot injury. She subsequently died. Norfolk State University identified Coleman as a senior studying Health Services Management and said she was from Mollusk in Lancaster County, Virginia.

Charges filed and inquiry continues

Police detained Matthew B. Croslin, 23, of Newport News, at the location. Authorities accuse him of involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm. Those charges are allegations, and no determination of guilt has been reported.

WTVR CBS 6 reported that Croslin was held without bond in Norfolk City Jail. Police said the investigation was continuing.

Norfolk State said Coleman participated in its Spartans Promise to Persist with Purpose program and had recently joined the National Association for Allied Health Professions. The university made counseling and other support available to students and employees.
