Los Angeles this week: Movies step off the screen
Halloween week is anchored by two screen-centered events, with a multi-artist El Rey bill, hockey downtown and a late Sunday performance offering distinct turns between them.
A practical change on Los Angeles streets
KTLA reported on Monday, October 26, that Los Angeles was beginning operation of its first automated speed cameras that day. The cameras are located around the city, including in school zones and on streets with a history of serious crashes. For drivers, that makes the week’s most consequential local development part of an ordinary trip rather than a special destination.
The week opens with audience participation
Before the weekend, the film theme begins Monday, October 26, at The Wiltern. The Rocky Horror Picture Show Spooktacular Tour is scheduled to combine a new 4K restoration with a live shadow cast, audience participation and Barry Bostwick, the original Brad Majors. Doors are listed for 7 p.m. PDT and the show for 8 p.m.
This is the week’s more participatory screen event, and its entry rules require planning: admission ends 40 minutes before showtime, with no late entry. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian over 21, and every attendee needs a ticket regardless of age.
Two midweek changes of pace
Wednesday, October 28, brings Aurat to the El Rey Theatre at 8 p.m. PDT. The bill also names DJ Milagro, DJ Mimi Cry, Kohinoorgasm and Nuxx. No genre is specified, but the five-name lineup makes this a useful choice for readers interested in an ensemble bill rather than one of the week’s film-centered programs.
The following evening offers a clearly different format: the Los Angeles Kings are scheduled to play the Ottawa Senators at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday, October 29, at 7 p.m. PDT. It is the week’s sports selection and an earlier start than the performances highlighted for Saturday and Sunday.
Halloween’s main pick: UHF at the Greek
The most distinctive continuation of the screen theme comes on Halloween. UHF LIVE-TO-SCREEN with “Weird Al” Yankovic is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at 8 p.m. PDT at the Greek Theatre. Five days after Rocky Horror at The Wiltern, it gives Los Angeles two very different opportunities to encounter a movie as a specially staged evening rather than a standard screening.
The Greek Theatre listing says no one under 5 will be admitted. Beyond that condition, the listing provides few admission details, so check the organizer’s current information before setting out.
A late Sunday finish
Mýa closes the edition’s window at Blue Note Los Angeles on Sunday, November 1, with a scheduled 9:30 p.m. PST performance. It is a late music-focused counterpoint to Saturday’s live-to-screen event. Table seating is all ages, while the bar area is restricted to guests 21 and older; bar-area tickets for patrons under 21 will not be honored.
The venue also specifies a $20 minimum per person and first-come, first-served seating. Bar seating is limited, and that area becomes standing room once its seats are occupied. Those arrangements make the table and bar options meaningfully different, especially for mixed-age parties planning the final outing of the week.
