Lugano pulls clear at the top
FC Lugano opened a nine-point lead in the Swiss Super League with a 2-1 home victory over Basel on Sunday. The result extended Lugano’s unbeaten league start to 11 wins and one draw, according to Le Temps.
Lugano established its winning position during the opening half-hour at the AIL Arena before protecting the advantage with a compact defence. The team has averaged three goals per league match this season.
Second-placed Young Boys lost 5-3 at home to FC Zurich. Young Boys remain the only league opponent to have taken points from Lugano, earning a 2-2 draw on 12 September.
Ajeti finds form on loan
Albian Ajeti has scored six goals in 11 appearances for Lugano since moving on loan from Basel, KOHA.net reported. Lugano coach Mattia Croci-Torti described the move as a successful one.
Croci-Torti has also credited Lugano’s results to a unified and balanced squad, saying players can enter the team without changing its performance or mentality.
Unbeaten run extends beyond league
Lugano has also remained unbeaten in its other competitions. The club has advanced through two Swiss Cup rounds against amateur opposition and three European qualifying rounds, followed by Conference League victories over Red Star Belgrade and Getafe.
The team will host Lithuania’s Kauno Zalgiris on Thursday in the third round of Conference League group-stage fixtures. Lugano has two wins from its opening two matches in the group stage.
